The NVMe Ecosystem Continues to Expand in Size and Complexity (Mike Heumann, December 5, 2018)

Today G2M Research released our fifth edition of the NVMe Market Sizing Report. This report, which is updated semi-annually, is the only market forecast that encompasses the entire NVMe ecosystem, from NVMe-capable servers to storage appliances, NVMe All-Flash Arrays (AFAs), NVMe SSDs, and NVMe over Fabric (NVMe-oF) network adapters. To say a lot has changed since the first report would be an understatement – today there are over 100 companies shipping a total of roughly 380 NVMe or NVMe-oF products. This includes 127 models of NVMe SSDs and 121 servers with NVMe drive bays. Every major storage system vendor is also shipping one or more AFAs with NVMe SSDs and/or NVMe-oF target interfaces. We expect that the overall NVMe market will continue to grow, and reach a revenue level of over $80B by 2022.

At the same time, the ecosystem is continuing to develop as represented by the focus on NVMe as a technology for product development. The first NVMe Developer Days Conference kicked off today (I have the honor of being the Conference Chairman), which focuses on providing tools, tips, and best practices to NVMe developers. The SNIA Storage Developer Conference in September of this year also focused heavily on NVMe, kicking off a variety of new technical working groups focusing on various aspects of the NVMe ecosystem. These milestones will help to push NVMe further and wider into the IT market. It is an exciting time to be involved with NVMe, and we hope that our work can help the wider IT community understand this market and how they might use it. If you would like to get a copy of our NVMe Ecosystem Snapshot (a subset of the NVMe Market Sizing Report which describes the NVMe ecosystem), please click here – we will send you a copy when it is released later today. Thanks again!
